  • Activity in line with company's continuous relief efforts following the Eastern Japan Earthquake

TOKYO – Together with Bosch Japan 250 children celebrated a charity event themed in accordance with St. Nikolaus Day which is traditionally celebrated on December 6th in Germany and other European countries. Three day-care centers in Higashimatsushima-city, Miyagi prefecture received an unusual visit by Herbert Hemming, member of the board of Bosch in Japan: Mr. Hemming dressed up as St. Nikolaus handed over small packages with German wooden toys and biscuits to the children. Students of the German School Tokyo Yokohama joined the event and brought handmade Christmas ornaments. Afterwards Mr. Hemming summarized "We are hopeful that this event gave comfort and strength to these remarkable children who remained cheerful and full of energy despite their ordeal". The Naruse Temporary Day Care Center, which is amongst the three visited facilities, is made of container houses that have been donated by the Bosch Group earlier in August this year.

Mr. Abe, mayor of Higashimatsushima-city, mentioned: "It is normal that civil servants work for the citizens and society, but that a private company undertakes so many relief activities in accordance with its founder's philanthropy spirit cannot be taken for granted and is very impressive."

St. Nikolaus Day is a tradition which is celebrated in wide regions of Europe. Legend has it that the saint brings gifts to children and places them in their boots or socks. The nowadays more known Santa Claus is derived from the legend of St. Nikolaus.

To date, the Bosch Group has donated 300 container units worth roughly 400 million yen which were converted to 14 facilities such as day-care centers and classrooms. In addition six clean diesel passenger vehicles were also given by the Bosch Group. As early as March 2011 200 professional powertools were donated to assist with the immediate clean up activities at the devastated areas. 10 Volunteer teams totaling some 400 Bosch associates travelled to the disaster areas to support recovery efforts.

In the spirit of the company's founder Robert Bosch, the Bosch Group is committed to social responsibility activities around the world. Following the aftermath of Eastern Japan Earthquake, Bosch continues with its relief efforts, especially in Higashimatsushima in Miyagi Prefecture, one of the worst-affected areas. The activities and events to continue the efforts in 2012 are already in planning.
